01 Patina is a kind of memory
The softening of a timber edge, a stone surface gaining a gentle sheen, a handwoven fabric settling into its place: these marks tell us that a room is being lived in. In a culture of fast finishes, there is something quietly generous about materials that can carry a little evidence of daily life.
02 Begin with how a room is used
A beautiful finish has to work in its setting. A kitchen counter needs a different relationship to staining and heat than a side table. A passage benefits from surfaces that welcome contact. Thinking about use first helps narrow choices and makes maintenance part of the design conversation, rather than an afterthought.
03 Choose a palette that can evolve
Natural stone, solid timber, lime-based finishes, and woven fibres can each develop their own character. They also vary. Their tonal shifts and tactile irregularities are part of what makes them feel human. Samples viewed in the actual light of a room can tell a more useful story than a catalogue image.
